How to kick the stinking thinking: Get rid of negativity
My dad used to say ” Get rid of that stinking thinking “. I would always giggle at the word stinking when I was younger; now I totally get it, and want to teach it to you as well. It really is much more simple than you can imagine.
The reality is that we control everything that happens to us. ” But Erin, what if somebody does harm to us” ? Ok, we cannot control acts of God, but we CAN control every action that we take in most all situations. Let’s look at some examples of actions we make by choice of our own :
- Having a bad
- Upset with a friend
- Feeling like you never have enough of physical items
- Feeling unloved
- Feeling stuck in a dead end job
- Never traveling
- Not having enough friends
I could list many more, but this gives you an idea of what choices are made by you to bring on that stinking thinking. I know it seems hard to believe that things like: having a low paying job, feeling unloved, not being able to travel, and people judging you are brought on by choices you’ve made, but they truly are. If you pay close attention to your own emotions in regards to relationships, you will soon learn that it is not other’s behaviors that are creating your misery, but your responses. When you respond out of anger, defiance, blame, etc. , you end up feeling hurt, anxious, and stressed. No one can force you to feel or act a certain way; and that is where the power of positive thinking comes in.
How can we learn to manage these painful feelings? Well, by making different choices; and the smallest choice can often make the biggest difference. Here are some examples of what we can do to turn our negativity into positivity :
- Surround yourself with positive people
- Change your eating habits to healthy ones
- Don’t play the victim; take responsibility for your actions
- Start a gratitude list
- Create a vision board
- Start the day with a positive affirmation
- Smile ( even if you don’t feel it )
Negativity does not have to rule our lives; every choice we make affects the next, so why not make those choices positively? We spend so much time being negative, but seem to find it so hard to be positive and grateful for what our lives hold. We have the power to make our lives joyful and enriching if we want; the glass is neither half empty or half full for me; in my world I always have the option to just refill it whenever I choose too.
Remember, there will be times that negativity hits the most upbeat of people, but it is up to you how long you allow that negativity to be a guest in your home.
