I think often as artists we feel tied down to one style to define who we are; if we have created the same style for years, why change? Life IS all about change and we should embrace the adage that as we change ,we open up new avenues of interests, and embrace talents that we never knew we had.

be an artist

I know that my artistry has changed in a vast manner. I started out almost feverishly creating and sewing anything I possibly could, thinking “ Because I CAN sew, I should JUST do that“. Now I know that my avenue of thought is ” Because I CAN create, I KNOW that I should always create from my heart, whatever that may be, and even if I am the only one that sees it.”

Artists have a tendency to create art only to sell, rather than creating solely for themselves. And if your art IS your business, creating to sell is vital. But even more vital is imagining what you would create if money was not in the equation, and then DOING IT!  You may shock yourself with what comes alive inside of you. So I challenge all of you amazing and talented artists out there; create a piece for YOU. Something you will never sell, perhaps you may never even show it to anyone; make a conscious choice to NOT decide, and simply create. I would love to hear from some of you on what awakened inside, what the process was, and if you choose to share your piece, I would love to see it.
